Using Tallow on Your Pets
One of my favorite uses for our tallow (as if any of them AREN’T my favorite), is on pets! In the same way it is ultra nourishing and gentle on our skin, it is for pets’ skin too. Our furry, four-legged friends are not immune to skin issues. But have you seen all the ingredients in conventional skin creams for pets? The lists are lengthy and include dangerous chemicals that are likely making your pets skin worse.
We don’t use harsh chemicals in our home or on our bodies and we think it’s important that your pets get only the best ingredients as well! Beef tallow, olive oil, and beeswax (in our balms) are all safe and incredibly healing for your pets’ skin. Let’s chat about a few ways you can use our tallows to soothe and heal their skin woes.
PAWS: Their paws can get irritated, itchy, dry, cracked. Sometimes this can be caused by an overgrowth of yeast. Due to the amazing fatty acid profile of tallow, it has anti-fungal properties and can help balance out the overgrowth! I like to do an apple cider vinegar soak, then you can follow that with tallow. Other times their paws get bothered from the weather —dry and cracked from too cold or even burnt from pavement that’s too hot! Tallow is the perfect solution for all these situations.
HOT SPOTS: Typically triggered by too much itching of a small, irritated spot. It could be something as small as a poke from a branch to an irritated spot under their coat from moisture. Something makes them itch, opens their skin/wound, and throws them into an itching cycle making the area worse. Animals can’t stop when they’ve started and hot spots are formed. These spots can be very bothersome and painful for them. Tallow can help soothe the itching, giving it time to heal without being scratched. It can help heal or resolve what caused it in the first place. And, the tallow can help bring balance back to your pets skin!
IRRITATED SKIN: For a myriad of reasons, pets get dry, irritated, red, flaky, inflamed, cracked skin. Sometimes that’s their nose, elbow pads, bellies, or other areas. Our pets even get cuts and scrapes that might benefit from a little soothing support. Tallow can help relieve their symptoms and get them back to their chipper selves!
Our tallow whips and balms are perfectly safe your use on your pets skin. It’s also safe for ingestion, so no worries if they lick it. After all, it is food! Your furry friend might actually think it’s a treat. (Mine sure did. How do you think he posed so perfectly for these shots?)
My first choice for my pup would be Armor Balm! I love the added benefits of the beeswax in our balms. If he had a serious irritation going on, I might opt for the Peace Balm because of the added benefits that the organic lavender provides—like anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.
